As part of my initial outreach to garner interest in the PDX Digital PM meetups, I’ve gotten in touch with project managers and producers all over Portland. Through my research and outreach, I’ve had some interesting findings on Portland’s Digital PM scene:
Who are we?
I did a sweep of Portland’s larger agencies that have a web or digital component (“larger” being large enough to be on my radar) for job titles either from LinkedIn or company websites. That resulted in a list of nearly 200 employees that generally fit the profile. And that’s just the agencies that I’m familiar with! Then there’s the startup PMs, the micro-agencies, and the freelancers or sole proprietors in town.
In a scan of of those I reached out to, approximately 70% are female, 30% male. Common titles include project manager, producer, coordinator, and project director. Title modifiers were numerous, and include experience (director/senior/junior/associate etc.) and specialty (digital/web/technical/interactive, etc.).
The overall level of experience seems to be relatively junior as a whole. Given that the digital PM role is a fairly new trend, that’s not surprising.
As far as location goes, a majority of the larger agencies in Portland are concentrated in downtown and the Pearl, with others scattered in inner NE and SE Portland.
That’s just scratching the surface on understanding the who and what of Portland’s community.
Tell me more!
The topic planned for our first meetup in January is “Defining Digital PM – The People and the Role” so not surprisingly, I want to get into a bit more detail.
Whether or not you plan on attending the January event, if you consider yourself part of Portland’s Digital PM community, please fill out this survey to help us understand the “who” of the community a bit better. In addition to a panel discussion, I’ll present the results of the survey at the first meetup!
If you’d like to go a step further, I’m still looking for individuals interested in being profiled on this site (see http://pdxdigitalpm.com/category/profiles/ for examples). If that’s you, please don’t hesitate to contact me at email@example.com.
Details on our January meetup, you ask? Check out the Eventbrite page and RSVP!
