Last Tuesday, February 10th, our largest group to-date converged at Substance in inner NE. Thanks for being great hosts! The topic was near to all of our hearts – Managing scope creep.
We broke up into three discussion groups with the following emphases:
- Defining scope
- Managing scope internally
- Managing & communicating scope externally

Half-way through we rotated groups to give everyone a chance for a second subtopic. A few of our attendees offered some smart best-practices to try. Here are a few:
- Implementing a Discovery phase, to spend time understanding the project needs and background, and develop a more accurate, mutually beneficial SOW
- Leaning on senior leadership to help make the “Eat it or Pass it on” call
- Involving clients in prioritization of deliverables within a limited budget
- Educating both internal teams and clients on common areas of scope quicksand
- Using a framework outside just the SOW to better define the process, scope, and roles to minimize creep

This was a very engaging and relevant topic for attendees. Thanks to everyone who gave input last December on potential topics. We heard everyone’s thoughts and have developed a schedule of crowd favorites for the next few meetups.
PDX Digital PM has grown to be a dynamic group of intelligent individuals! We love seeing new faces each month along with those we’ve already gotten to know. Please join us on Tuesday, March 10th for our next meetup, all about the Emotional Intelligence of Project Management. More information will be posted here on our blog as the event approaches.
