February’s meetup was another great success! First off, huge thanks to ThinkShout for hosting and providing ample pizza and drinks! I realized I forgot to give some time to ThinkShout to self-promote at the meetup, so I’ll need to make it up to them next month. And here’s their logo. You should click it and check them out:
Next up, big thanks to our three group leaders for the evening, Indi Petranek-McHugh from Thinkshout, Andrew McCollough from Insilico, and Claire Seibert from ThinkShout. They all did a great job of facilitating conversation, steering topics, taking notes, and presenting recaps at the end of the meetup!
We had approximately 40 attendees this month which pretty much filled the space. Keep your eyes peeled for next month’s meetup RSVP at Instrument. It’s a big bigger space, so we’ll be able to open up more RSVPs for attendees.
This month’s format was completely different from January, and we’ll likely continue playing with formats until we find one or more that seem to fit the group dynamics, space constraints, and topics.
We split into three small groups of 10-15 people, and had three “stations” moderated by a discussion leader mentioned above. Each group rotated every 15-20 minutes between the three stations and had short discussions about each in the process. As the night went on, new groups were able to build on the previous group’s conversations for each topic. At the end, each discussion leader presented their highlights, takeaways, and trends from the group discussions they moderated.
The topics we covered for the evening were:
- Project management involvement in pre-sales activities like scoping, resourcing, writing documents, and more
- Discovery projects as a separate engagement with clients, including what different organizations called them, the scope of discovery, the deliverables from discovery, and the goals of those engagements
- Project kickoff and planning tasks to get a project started on the right foot
All the discussion was spirited and insightful, and the general feedback I heard from attendees was that the format worked great. I hope to have some recaps from the discussion leaders themselves up on the blog soon. Stay tuned!
Our next meetup is scheduled for March 11th starting at 5:30PM. Instrument will be hosting! Watch for an RSVP link soon, or join the mailing list to be the first notified!
Thanks to all who came, and if you didn’t make it, we hope to see you next time!
